Without comparison the port of Skagen is the port in Denmark, where the largest amount of pelagic fish are landed.  For example more than 100,000 t of herring are landed in Skagen. As an active partner, the port of Skagen wants to support the consolidation and development which has taken place within the herring industry during the past years. The port of Skagen wants to remain the most important port concerning landing of herring in Northern Europe.

As the only Danish port, the port of Skagen has an active matjes herring auction. The specialized fishery for matjes herring takes place in the early summer - the season is short and hectic. The herring which is primarily sold as a delicacy to the Dutch and the German market, is caught by large fishing vessels and require gentle treatment from sea to customer. At the port of Skagen there is a cluster of companies, and modern facilities make it possible for large vesses to unload the fish quick and safe, however at the same time the herring is treated gently.
